Privacy and the Computer Technician

Over the past few years a number of reports of “criminals”, usually alleged paedophiles, have been caught because “illegal” photographs and/or videos were found on their computer. A computer technician, while working on the computer “found” the files and then reported this to the appropriate authorities. It is somewhat disturbing that none of the various news items on this particular topic have ever recognized, or even raised the possibility of, the serious and dangerous breach of privacy and ethics which has occurred. It is as if the reports are designed to lead the public to accept such breaches due to the overriding “good” that results.

Backups? I don't need backups! Do I?

The subject of backups causes a great deal of anguish for many of us. All the time, we hear repeatedly, the importance of backing up our computer. Things generally go downhill from this point. Unless one has experienced losing valuable or important documents and/or information, the importance of having current and verified backups doesn't have a high priority with us. Newer is Better, right?

Why Defragging Is A Good Thing

How many times has the neighbourhood kid told you, with a hint of disapproval, that your computer needs to be "defragged"? The kid probably never bothered to explain why. The kid is likely taking great delight in torturing you because he knows something you don't. As adults we really don't like that feeling. A basic explanation of what hard drive defragmentation is and why it is important.

Computer Do's & Don'ts

The following is a list of computer "Do's" and "Don'ts". We live in a society where each of us is free to do as we please. For those people comfortable with all things computer related these lists may be seen as simplistic and condescending. These lists are for those people not fully computer literate, or who are happy to use a computer without worrying about thousands of details. I welcome your comments and suggestions adding to and improving these recommendations.
